Sleep is an essential aspect of our overall health and well-being, and getting a good night’s rest is vital for us to function properly. The quality of sleep we get depends on several factors, one of those being the mattress we sleep on – options like latex, memory foam, and conventional foam mattresses all have their own unique properties; choosing the right one can make all the difference in your sleep experience. With so many options to choose from, deciding which one is right for you can be overwhelming. Are memory foam mattresses better than latex mattresses? What about more traditional options? Not to mention the memory foam toppers and custom foam mattresses – with mattresses, the possibilities are endless. That’s where we come in!
In this blog post, we’ll share our tips for evaluating the different mattress options based on a few things: the materials they’re made of and what the mattresses are typically used for. We’ll also teach you how to choose the right mattress based on the type of sleeper you are. Whether you’re a back, stomach, side, or combination sleeper, you’ll be able to select the right mattress for you.
What Are the Different Foam Mattress Materials?
Each type of foam mattress is different. Each type is made with its own set of benefits and potential drawbacks. Understanding the various foam types can help you choose the option that best suits your needs. Here are some of the most common foam mattresses, and our tips for evaluating them:
Conventional Foam
If you are looking for a great all-around mattress, then a conventional foam mattress may be the answer. Simple and affordable, yet comfortable and supportive, this foam type comes in a variety of firmness levels and densities to meet your needs. Sometimes, something that offers comfort, while still giving a solid support, can make all the difference in achieving a good night’s rest. Conventional foam mattresses are a good choice for any type of sleeper.
Memory Foam
Memory foam is a popular mattress material that conforms to the shape of your body, providing excellent pressure relief. It is ideal for people who suffer from back pain or joint pain by evenly distributing weight to help pressure points. Memory foam mattresses are also excellent for motion isolation, which makes them a great option for couples. They also provide support to the shoulders and hips.
One drawback of mattresses made with memory foam is that they tend to retain heat. This can be uncomfortable, especially for people who sleep a bit warmer. This is something that can be easily remedied by adding cotton sheets or similar materials as a cover.
When choosing a memory foam mattress, there are a few key factors to consider. First, look at the density of the foam. Higher-density foams are higher quality and will last longer. Second, look at the thickness of the memory foam layer. A thicker layer will provide more pressure relief. You’ll also want to consider the firmness of the mattress since they come in a variety of firmness levels – choose the one that suits you best.
Latex
Foam Factory carries Latex foam that is made out of natural rubber materials. Latex foam mattresses are known for their durability and support. Natural latex foam is an excellent choice for people who suffer from allergies, as it is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and mold. Latex mattresses are also known for their breathability, which makes them a good choice for people who sleep hot. The only downside of these mattresses is that they can be expensive compared to other mattress materials, but they are well worth the price.
When evaluating these mattresses, first consider the type of latex used. Outside of Foam Factory, there are two variations of latex used for mattresses: natural and synthetic. Natural latex is made from the sap of rubber trees and is more expensive than synthetic latex, which is made from petrochemicals. Natural latex is also more durable and provides better support. You’ll also want to identify the firmness of the mattress. Latex mattresses come in a range of firmness levels, so choose one that suits your sleeping style. Foam Factory offers a Latex with a medium feel. Finally, consider the thickness of the latex layer. A thicker layer will provide more support and pressure relief.
Futon Mattresses
A futon mattress is a type of mattress that originated in Japan and is designed to be used on a futon frame. These mattresses are typically made of cotton, wool, foam or a combination of both, and are designed to be both a comfortable sleeping surface and a foldable seating or lounging surface during the day.
In addition to being used on futon frames, a futon mattress can also be used on platform beds, as floor mattresses, or even as camping mattresses. They are versatile and can be easily moved and transported, making them a great choice for people who need a comfortable sleeping surface that can be easily stored or moved when needed.
Foam Factory’s futon mattresses are made of a number of pieces of foam wrapped in Dacron. The foam is slightly separated in the middle to give the hinged effect to create foldable seating. The foam used to create these is our medium feeling conventional foam for simple comfort and support.
Choosing A Mattress Based on Your Sleeping Preferences
Choosing the right mattress is essential for getting a good night’s sleep, and the type of sleeper you are is a key component to finding the right fit. Back sleepers, side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers all have different needs when it comes to their sleeping environment. By understanding your sleeping position and the type of support you need, you can choose the best mattress for your specific requirements and get the restful sleep you deserve. Here’s how to choose the right mattress based on your sleeping preferences:
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a mattress that provides support primarily to their lower back and spine. A medium-firm mattress is generally the best option for back sleepers because it provides support while still contouring to the natural curve of the spine.
When choosing a mattress as a back sleeper, look for one with a medium-firm feel and a thicker comfort layer to provide pressure relief. A mattress with a zoned support system can be helpful for back sleepers. A zoned support system provides extra support for the lumbar region, where those who sleep on their backs need it most.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers need a mattress that provides pressure relief for their hips and shoulders while still supporting their spine by keeping it straight. A mattress with a softer feel, such as a contouring memory foam, is generally the best option for side sleepers because it allows their shoulders and hips to sink in while still providing enough support for their spine.
When shopping for a mattress as a side sleeper, choose one with a soft to medium feel and a thicker comfort layer to provide pressure relief. Additionally, a mattress with a zoned support system can also be beneficial for side sleepers. These systems can provide extra support for the hips and shoulders, which is what you need as a side sleeper.
Stomach Sleepers
These sleepers need a mattress that provides support for their hips and stomach while still keeping their spine in alignment. A firmer mattress is generally the best option for stomach sleepers because it keeps their hips from sinking too far into the mattress, which can cause the spine to curve unnaturally.
As you’re shopping, look for mattresses with a firmer feel and a thinner comfort layer to prevent sinking in. Firm support in the center of the mattress can help keep the hips and abdomen in a neutral position, reducing discomfort and strain on the lower back.
Combination Sleepers
If you’re a combination sleeper who changes positions throughout the night, it can be a bit more challenging to find the right mattress. Typically, a mattress with a medium feel generally works well for people who sleep in a combination of ways. This type of mattress provides support and pressure relief for all sleeping positions.
As a combination sleeper, you’ll want to look for a mattress with a medium feel and a thicker comfort layer to provide pressure relief. We would also recommend looking for a mattress designed to be responsive and contour to the body, such as memory foam or latex. These materials can provide a supportive yet cushioning surface that adapts to the body’s movements and provides pressure relief where needed.

I have bought LUX-HQ ,6″ mattress . But this is too hard for me and giving me pain. I am back sleeper and wanted medium firm /not too soft type mattress . I am thinking to add topper on this to give softness . One option is 4″ memory foam, the other option is 4″ HD36 . or may be 2″+2″ both. Can you please recommend ,what will give me good results to reduce firmness but still not too soft .
Hello,
Unfortunately we are not mattress experts and the foam type will be a personal preference. The HD foam is a medium firmness and will only add a touch of softness, as at 3” thick this foam can be used by a mattress on its own.
The memory foam will add softness, but the topper will bottom out and you will still feel the firm foam underneath.
